About Jackson

On July 6, 1854, a crowd too big for any hall gathered under a grove of oak trees on the edge of Jackson and formally launched the Republican Party, a claim the city still celebrates. Jackson grew as a railroad junction and factory town in south-central Michigan, building early automobiles, corsets and auto parts, and its downtown still holds the Art Deco tower of Consumers Energy, the utility founded here.

The city's best-known sight is Cascades Falls Park, a stepped man-made waterfall from the 1930s that glows with colored lights and music on summer evenings. Ella Sharp Park, a former farm estate, combines a golf course and gardens with a museum of art and local history, and the restored Michigan Theatre brings films and concerts downtown.

Green space spreads beyond the city: the Dahlem Conservancy's woods and wetlands on the south side, and the paved Falling Waters Trail toward Concord. In July, hot-air balloons fill the sky at the Hot Air Jubilee, and no visit is complete without a coney dog at a diner that has served them since 1914.

Best seasonJune to September for the illuminated Cascades, trails and the July Hot Air Jubilee.
Ideal stayOne to two days.
ArrivingInterstate 94 passes the north side of town; Amtrak's Wolverine stops downtown, and Detroit Metro Airport is about an hour east.
