About Battle Creek

Battle Creek is a city of about 52,000 people in south-central Michigan, where the Battle Creek River joins the Kalamazoo River, roughly halfway between Detroit and Chicago. It is famous as Cereal City, where John Harvey Kellogg's sanitarium, his brother W.K. Kellogg and C.W. Post turned breakfast cereal into a worldwide industry, and cereal is still made in the city today.

The city also has deep roots in abolition and reform. Sojourner Truth, the formerly enslaved preacher and activist, lived here for many years and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, and Monument Park downtown honors her and the Underground Railroad. Historic Adventist Village recalls the founding years of the Seventh-day Adventist church, which shaped the city's health movement.

Families come for Binder Park Zoo, with its large African savanna exhibit, and the hands-on Kingman Museum. Leila Arboretum, the Linear Path and nearby Fort Custer Recreation Area add green space, while summer brings the Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival and the Cereal Festival.

Best seasonMay to September, especially June for the Cereal Festival and early July for the balloon festival.
Ideal stayOne to two days.
ArrivingKalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is about 25 minutes west; Amtrak stops at Battle Creek station and I-94 runs along the south side.
