About Pomona

Pomona lies in the eastern San Gabriel Valley, on land that was part of Rancho San Jose, granted in 1837 to Ricardo Vejar and Ygnacio Palomares, whose adobe homes still stand. The town was laid out in 1875 and named for Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit, after a contest held by local nurserymen, a fitting name for a community that grew among citrus groves and orchards. It was incorporated in 1888.

The arrival of the railroad made Pomona a busy shipping town for oranges and lemons, and in 1922 it became home to the Los Angeles County Fair, which grew into one of the largest county fairs in the United States, held each September at the Fairplex. Downtown Pomona keeps grand early 1900s buildings, the Fox Theater of 1931 and an Arts Colony of galleries, studios and music venues.

Pomona is also a college town, home to Cal Poly Pomona with its Arabian horse center and to Western University of Health Sciences, with the Claremont Colleges just next door. Visitors can explore the historic Adobe de Palomares and Phillips Mansion, ride a classic locomotive at the RailGiants Train Museum and enjoy the Fairplex's shows and events year-round.

Best seasonSeptember brings the L.A. County Fair; October to May is pleasant, while summers are hot.
Ideal stayOne day for the Arts Colony, historic adobes and Cal Poly's horse shows, or longer during the county fair.
ArrivingOntario International Airport is about 15 minutes east, Metrolink and Amtrak stop in downtown Pomona, and Interstate 10 and State Route 60 run through the city.
