About Montebello

Montebello is a city of about 61,000 people in Los Angeles County, California, about eight miles east of downtown Los Angeles between East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. Incorporated in 1920, it grew from farmland and oil fields into a residential city with a large Latino community and a long-established Armenian community.

Montebello is best known for the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument in Bicknell Park, built in 1968 as one of the first memorials in the United States to the victims of the Armenian Genocide; each April 24 it draws large commemorations. The city also preserves the Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe, a mid-1800s adobe home from the rancho era, and has a municipal golf course and green parks such as Grant Rea Park.

Montebello is a convenient base for exploring the eastern side of Los Angeles. Downtown LA, Olvera Street and Dodger Stadium are about 20 minutes away without traffic, and the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, Pasadena and the San Gabriel Mission are close by.

Best seasonMarch to June and September to November for mild weather; late April for the genocide commemoration.
Ideal stayA few hours, or a base for exploring east Los Angeles.
ArrivingLos Angeles International Airport is about 40 to 60 minutes away depending on traffic; the Pomona Freeway (State Route 60) crosses the city.
