About Alhambra

Alhambra is a city of about 82,000 people in the western San Gabriel Valley, roughly eight miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Incorporated in 1903 and named after Washington Irving's Tales of the Alhambra, it grew as a streetcar suburb with Spanish-themed street names, and today it is a diverse community known across Southern California for its Chinese and other Asian restaurants.

The revitalized Main Street downtown has shops, cafes, a cinema and a busy weekly farmers market, while Valley Boulevard is lined with dumpling houses, noodle shops and bakeries. Fosselman's Ice Cream, making ice cream in Alhambra for about a century, is a local institution.

Alhambra Park and Almansor Park offer green space, with the city's municipal golf course nearby, and the Alhambra Historical Society Museum tells the city's story. Pasadena, the San Gabriel Mission, the Huntington and downtown Los Angeles are all within a short drive.

Best seasonYear round; spring and fall are warm and comfortable.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day for food and Main Street, or as a base for the San Gabriel Valley.
ArrivingBurbank Airport is about 30 minutes away and LAX about 40 minutes, traffic permitting; the I-10 runs along the city's southern edge.
