About Riverside

Riverside was founded in 1870 by John W. North and a group of settlers who dug canals from the Santa Ana River to water the dry valley. In 1873 Eliza Tibbets planted two seedless navel orange trees from Brazil here, and their fruit launched California's citrus industry. One of those parent trees still grows in the city, and by the 1890s Riverside was said to be one of the richest cities per person in the country.

The wealth of the orange boom shows in the Mission Inn, a sprawling hotel that grew from 1903 into a fantasy of Spanish, Mission and Moorish architecture, with chapels, courtyards and a famous collection of bells. Downtown also has the Riverside Fox Performing Arts Center, the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art, the Museum of Riverside and a memorial to the city's historic Chinatown.

Above the city rises Mount Rubidoux, crowned by a cross and a peace tower and loved for its sunrise views and walking paths. California Citrus State Historic Park preserves working groves, the University of California, Riverside has a lovely botanic garden, and each winter the Mission Inn glows with millions of lights for the Festival of Lights.

Best seasonOctober to May; late November to early January brings the Festival of Lights, while summers are hot.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the Mission Inn, downtown museums, Mount Rubidoux and the citrus park.
ArrivingOntario International Airport is about 25 minutes northwest, and Metrolink and Amtrak trains stop in Riverside.
