About Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara lies on a south-facing stretch of the California coast, between the Pacific and the Santa Ynez Mountains, about a hundred miles northwest of Los Angeles. After an earthquake in 1925, the city rebuilt in a Spanish Colonial Revival style, which is why white stucco walls and red tile roofs define its downtown. The mild climate has earned it the nickname "American Riviera."

History is easy to find. Old Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786 and known as the "Queen of the Missions," sits on a rise above town, and the Santa Barbara County Courthouse offers a clock tower lookout over the rooftops. El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park preserves part of the Spanish military outpost. State Street and its shaded paseos form the shopping and dining spine, ending near Stearns Wharf, a long wooden pier. The Funk Zone, near the waterfront, packs in tasting rooms and galleries, and East Beach is linked to a waterfront path popular with cyclists. Butterfly Beach sits in neighboring Montecito, where the gardens of Ganna Walska Lotusland can be visited by reservation.

The city suits travelers wanting an easygoing mix of beaches, history, food and wine. Shoreline Park and Arroyo Burro Beach are favorites for sunsets, and the Santa Ynez Valley wine country is an easy drive inland. Late spring can bring coastal fog, while fall is often warm and clear.

Best seasonSeptember and October are often sunniest; spring is pleasant, though May and June can be foggy.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers downtown, the mission and the beaches, with a wine country day optional.
ArrivingSanta Barbara has a regional airport, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner stops downtown, and Highway 101 links Los Angeles.
