About El Monte

El Monte lies in the San Gabriel Valley east of downtown Los Angeles, between the San Gabriel River and the Rio Hondo. Its name means the thicket in Spanish, after the willows and brush that once grew along the rivers. In the 1850s it became one of the earliest American farming settlements in Southern California, and it later took the nickname End of the Santa Fe Trail for the pioneers who arrived here.

The town grew with walnut orchards, farms and later suburban neighborhoods, and its story is told at the El Monte Museum of History and the Santa Fe Trail Historical Park, with its restored historic buildings.

Today El Monte is a busy, diverse city with a strong Latino and Asian American community and great casual food. El Monte Station is a major transit hub with express buses to downtown Los Angeles, while the river trails, Whittier Narrows and the Los Angeles County Arboretum offer green space nearby.

Best seasonOctober to May for mild days; summers are hot and sunny in the San Gabriel Valley.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day for the history sites, local food and nearby parks, or a base for exploring the San Gabriel Valley.
ArrivingLos Angeles International Airport is about 40 minutes away, Interstate 10 crosses the city, and El Monte Station has express buses to downtown LA.
