About Baldwin Park

Baldwin Park lies in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, with the San Gabriel Mountains rising to the north. It is named for Elias J. Baldwin, the colorful 19th century businessman known as Lucky Baldwin, who owned vast lands in the valley. The area grew as a farming community of walnut groves, dairies and vineyards, and it was incorporated as a city in 1956.

Baldwin Park holds a special place in fast food history as the birthplace of In-N-Out Burger, which Harry and Esther Snyder opened here in 1948 as what is often called California's first drive-through hamburger stand. A replica of the original stand now stands near the freeway, next to the company's university and store.

Today Baldwin Park is a busy, largely Latino community with local restaurants and markets, parks such as Morgan Park, and a Metrolink station. The Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area and the San Gabriel River Trail lie just to the north.

Best seasonOctober to May for mild days and clear mountain views; summers are hot.
Ideal stayA few hours for the In-N-Out replica, local food and parks, or a base for the San Gabriel Valley.
ArrivingOntario International Airport is about 25 minutes away, Metrolink trains stop in Baldwin Park, and Interstates 10 and 605 serve the city.
