About Anaheim

Anaheim was founded in 1857 by German immigrants who bought land along the Santa Ana River to plant vineyards. The name combines the river's name with the German word for home. A plant disease wiped out the grapes in the 1880s, and the settlers turned to oranges, making Anaheim part of the famous citrus belt of Orange County. The town's original 1857 home, the Mother Colony House, still stands.

Everything changed in 1955, when Walt Disney opened Disneyland on former orange groves in Anaheim. The park grew into a world-famous resort with Disney California Adventure and the Downtown Disney District, and Anaheim became one of the most visited cities in America, with a huge convention center and hotels to match.

Beyond the theme parks, Anaheim has major league sports at Angel Stadium and the Honda Center, and a revived downtown where the 1919 Packing House is now a busy food hall in the Anaheim Packing District. The Center Street Promenade has local shops, and Oak Canyon Nature Center offers quiet trails in the eastern hills.

Best seasonYear-round; late January to early March and September to early November usually have smaller crowds at the parks.
Ideal stayThree to four days for both Disney parks, a game and the Packing District; add beach days on the Orange County coast.
ArrivingJohn Wayne Airport is about 20 minutes south and Los Angeles International about 45 minutes, and Amtrak and Metrolink stop at the ARTIC transit center.
