About La Verne
La Verne is a city of about 31,000 people at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in eastern Los Angeles County, between San Dimas, Claremont and Pomona. It was founded in 1887 as Lordsburg, a land-boom town laid out by Isaac W. Lord, and was renamed La Verne in 1917. For decades it was surrounded by citrus groves, and its oldest neighborhoods still have a small-town feel.
The heart of the city is Old Town La Verne along D Street, next to the University of La Verne, which members of the Church of the Brethren founded in 1891 as Lordsburg College. Nearby, the United Methodist Church of La Verne is known to film fans as the church in the final wedding scene of The Graduate.
In the foothills, Marshall Canyon Regional Park has trails for hikers and riders, and Brackett Field Airport sits beside Puddingstone Reservoir and the large Bonelli Regional Park. With Metro A Line light rail now serving the area, La Verne is also an easy base for Claremont's colleges, the Fairplex in Pomona and Mount Baldy.
