About Ontario

Ontario was founded in 1882 by the Canadian brothers George and William Chaffey, engineers who laid out a model irrigation colony on the dry plain below the San Gabriel Mountains and named it after their home province. Their plan included water rights for every lot, an agricultural college and the grand Euclid Avenue, a double-wide street with a tree-lined median that ran from the town to the mountains and is still one of the city's treasures.

Citrus groves, olive orchards and vineyards spread across the valley, and the Graber Olive House, founded in 1894, still cures olives the traditional way. Ontario later grew around its airport, which became Ontario International Airport, and a busy logistics economy, while its Museum of History and Art fills a 1937 Mission Revival building that once served as city hall.

Today Ontario is the commercial heart of the western Inland Empire. Visitors come for the vast Ontario Mills outlet and entertainment center, events at the Ontario Convention Center and Toyota Arena, home of the Ontario Reign hockey team, and quiet walks along historic Euclid Avenue, with the San Gabriel Mountains as a backdrop.

Best seasonOctober to May; winter and spring bring snow-capped mountain views, while summers are hot.
