About Seattle

Seattle sits on hilly ground between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with the Olympic Mountains to the west and Mount Rainier visible to the southeast on clear days. It grew on lumber, the Klondike Gold Rush and later aviation and technology, and today it combines a busy port with green neighborhoods, coffee culture and a deep music history.

Pike Place Market, open since 1907, buzzes with fishmongers, produce stalls and small eateries, and the rebuilt waterfront and Overlook Walk now link it more easily to Elliott Bay. Pioneer Square holds the city's oldest buildings, and the Underground Tour explores storefronts left below street level after the area was regraded. At Seattle Center, the Space Needle stands beside Chihuly Garden and Glass and the Museum of Pop Culture. Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill frames the skyline, often with Rainier behind it. Boats pass through the Ballard Locks, where salmon climb a fish ladder in summer, and Discovery Park offers bluffs and a lighthouse beach. Fremont is known for its quirky public art, and Gas Works Park looks across Lake Union.

Seattle suits food lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and travelers who enjoy walkable neighborhoods. Summers are dry and mild, while much of the year brings gray skies and light rain. Ferries cross to Bainbridge Island, and Mount Rainier and the Olympic Peninsula make longer excursions.

Best seasonJuly through September brings dry, sunny weather and long days with the best mountain views.
Ideal stayThree to four days covers downtown, Seattle Center, a few neighborhoods and a ferry ride.
ArrivingSeattle-Tacoma International Airport lies south of the city and connects downtown by light rail.
