About Longview

Few American cities were planned on paper before a single house went up, but Longview was. In the early 1920s lumberman Robert A. Long brought his Long-Bell Lumber Company to the lower Columbia River and built a city for its workers, with a civic center, a grand hotel and a park-lined lake. The broad boulevards still follow that 1920s plan.

Lake Sacajawea Park curves through the middle of town, ringed by a walking path and a Japanese garden. Nearby, the Civic Center district keeps its library, the Monticello Hotel and the green lawns of R.A. Long Park, while Commerce Avenue and the restored Columbia Theatre anchor downtown. The tiny Nutty Narrows Bridge, built for squirrels in 1963, is the city's best-loved oddity.

The soaring Lewis and Clark Bridge leaps the Columbia to Oregon, Willow Grove Park offers a sandy river beach, and Mount St. Helens and its visitor centers are within a scenic drive to the northeast.

Best seasonJune to September for dry weather; August brings Squirrel Fest and lakeside events.
Ideal stayOne day in town, or two with a drive to Mount St. Helens.
ArrivingJust off I-5 about an hour north of Portland, Oregon; Portland International is the nearest major airport.
