About Lakewood

Lakewood is a city of about 63,000 people in Pierce County, Washington, just south of Tacoma on the shores of American Lake and several smaller lakes. Incorporated in 1996, it is one of the newer cities in the state, though the area was settled long before, and Fort Steilacoom, built in 1849, was one of the first U.S. Army posts in Washington Territory.

Lakewood's lakes give it its name and character. American Lake has public beaches and boating, and Lakewold Gardens, a historic estate on Gravelly Lake, displays beautiful gardens of rhododendrons, Japanese maples and rare plants. Thornewood Castle, a Gothic Tudor mansion, is also on American Lake.

Fort Steilacoom Park, on the former grounds of the historic fort, has trails around Waughop Lake, sports fields and a historic barn, and the Lakewood History Museum covers local history. Joint Base Lewis-McChord borders the city, and Tacoma, Mount Rainier and Puget Sound are all nearby.

Best seasonJune to September for lakes, gardens and outdoor events.
