About San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands are an archipelago in the Salish Sea between mainland Washington and Vancouver Island, made up of hundreds of islands and rocks, only a few of which are served by public ferries. Rolling farmland, forests, rocky shorelines and quiet harbors define the scenery. The islands are known for orca sightings and for the Pig War of 1859, a boundary dispute between the United States and Britain that ended without a battle.

San Juan Island is the most visited, and its main town, Friday Harbor, greets ferries with restaurants, shops and the Whale Museum. Lime Kiln Point State Park, on the west side, is one of the best places to watch for orcas from shore. The two sites of San Juan Island National Historical Park, English Camp and American Camp, recall the Pig War, and the open prairie near Cattle Point offers sweeping views. At the island's north end, Roche Harbor is a historic resort village with a busy marina.

Orcas Island is more mountainous. Moran State Park includes Mount Constitution, whose summit tower offers wide views, as well as Cascade Lake, Mountain Lake and Cascade Falls. Eastsound is the main village, and Turtleback Mountain offers quieter trails. Lopez Island suits cyclists, with Lopez Village, Spencer Spit, and coastal walks at Shark Reef Sanctuary and Iceberg Point.

Best seasonSummer brings dry weather and the best chances of orca sightings, while spring and fall are quieter.
