About Auburn

Auburn is a city of about 87,000 people in the Green River Valley of western Washington, between Seattle and Tacoma, with views of Mount Rainier on clear days. Once a farming town in the fertile White River Valley, it grew with the railroad and is now a diverse suburban city with a small historic downtown.

The White River Valley Museum tells the story of the valley's Native peoples, Japanese American farmers and railroad workers, and includes a restored caboose and depot. The Neely Mansion, built in 1894 by a pioneer family, is one of the oldest homes in the area and opens for tours and events.

Emerald Downs hosts thoroughbred horse racing from spring to fall, and the Muckleshoot Casino draws visitors year round. Auburn Environmental Park protects wetlands with boardwalks and birdwatching, while Les Gove Park and the Green River trails offer family outings. Main Street has local restaurants, and the Auburn Avenue Theater hosts comedy and shows.

Best seasonMay to September for dry weather, horse racing and Mount Rainier views.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day, as part of a Seattle or Tacoma trip.
ArrivingSeattle-Tacoma International Airport is about 20 minutes north; Sounder commuter trains stop in Auburn.
