About New City

New City is a hamlet of about 34,000 people in the town of Clarkstown and the county seat of Rockland County, New York, about 30 miles north of Midtown Manhattan on the west side of the Hudson River. Settled by Dutch farming families in the 1700s, it grew from a crossroads of farms and orchards into a busy suburban center, while keeping historic stone farmhouses and wooded hills.

The Historical Society of Rockland County is based here, beside the restored Jacob Blauvelt House, and the Depression-era Dutch Garden behind the county courthouse is a quiet spot for a stroll. In the early twentieth century, South Mountain Road became a celebrated colony of artists, writers and actors drawn by the views of High Tor.

Today New City is a good base for hiking the Hudson Highlands, with High Tor State Park rising on its northern edge and DeForest Lake stretching to the east. Nyack, Rockland Lake and Bear Mountain are all within a short drive.

Best seasonMay to October for hiking, with peak foliage in mid to late October.
Ideal stayA half day for local history, or a full day with a hike on High Tor.
ArrivingNew York City airports are about an hour away; the Palisades Interstate Parkway and the Thruway run nearby.
