About Newburgh

George Washington spent more time in Newburgh than at any other headquarters of the Revolutionary War, and it was here in 1783 that he quelled a brewing officers' mutiny and turned down talk of becoming king. The fieldstone Hasbrouck House where he lived still overlooks the wide Newburgh Bay of the Hudson River, now the first historic site ever purchased by an American state.

Newburgh later prospered as a river port and manufacturing city, and its hillside East End Historic District holds a remarkable collection of 19th-century brick rowhouses, mansions and churches, including work by Alexander Jackson Davis and Andrew Jackson Downing, a native son. Downing Park, designed by Olmsted and Vaux, honors him.

Today the city is in the middle of a revival. Restaurants and bars line the Front Street waterfront, the seasonal ferry crosses to Beacon, and Motorcyclepedia, New Windsor Cantonment and the Hudson Highlands are all close by. In winter, bald eagles fish in the ice floes off the shore.

Best seasonMay to October for the waterfront and ferry; January and February for eagle watching on the Hudson.
Ideal stayOne day for the history sites and waterfront, or a weekend paired with Beacon.
ArrivingNew York Stewart International Airport is about 10 minutes west; Metro-North trains reach Beacon, a ferry or bridge crossing away.
