Chelmsford is a New England town of about 36,000 people in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, just southwest of Lowell and about 25 miles northwest of Boston. Settled in the 1650s, it grew from farming villages into a busy suburb while keeping a classic town center with a green common, white church steeples and historic houses.
The town's history is easy to explore. The Old Chelmsford Garrison House recalls the colonial era, when fortified homes protected settlers, and the Barrett-Byam Homestead is home to the local historical society. Villages such as West Chelmsford and South Chelmsford still have their own mills, churches and quiet ponds.
Outdoors, the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail runs through town for walkers and cyclists, quiet ponds such as Heart Pond invite a stroll, and family farms such as Jones Farm sell produce and run pick-your-own seasons. Lowell's national historical park, the Merrimack River and the Concord battlefields are all a short drive away.
The traditional green at the heart of Chelmsford Center, framed by the First Parish church, old houses, shops and monuments to local soldiers. It hosts concerts, farmers markets and the start of the town's well-known Fourth of July celebrations. Park nearby and stroll the common and its surrounding historic streets.
The white steepled church facing the town common, home to the oldest congregation in Chelmsford, gathered in the 1650s. Its classic New England look makes it the signature view of Chelmsford Center, and a walking labyrinth on the grounds is open for quiet reflection. Please be respectful during services.
A rare surviving colonial garrison house, a fortified home where neighbors could shelter during conflicts of the late 1600s. Run by a local volunteer association, it shows early building methods and household life, with heritage events through the year. Open mainly on select days, so check the schedule ahead.
A historic house that serves as the home of the Chelmsford Historical Society, with rooms of period furniture, local artifacts, photographs and exhibits on the town's farms, schools and people. It is a good introduction to Chelmsford's past. Opening hours are limited, so check before visiting.
A paved multi-use trail on a former railroad line that starts near the Lowell line and runs south through Chelmsford toward Westford, Carlisle and Acton. It passes wetlands, ponds and woods and is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. Parking is available at several crossings; bring water on summer days.
A family farm in Chelmsford known for pick-your-own strawberries, blueberries and pumpkins in season, plus a farm stand, holiday trees and fall activities for children. It gets busy on autumn weekends. Check the farm's picking report before you go and arrive early for the best fruit.
A quiet spring-fed pond in South Chelmsford surrounded by homes and woods, popular with local anglers and paddlers and pleasant for a short walk or photos in any season. Public access points are limited, so check current town rules and parking before you go, and keep noise down in the neighborhood.
A small historic village in the western part of town along Stony Brook, with an old mill dam, a reservoir, a former freight depot, a white Methodist church and a short main street of older homes. It is a peaceful place for a short walk and photos, and the Stony Brook water views are lovely in fall foliage season.
