About Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury is a town of about 38,000 people in Worcester County, Massachusetts, on the eastern shore of Lake Quinsigamond just east of Worcester. Settled in the early 1700s, it was the home of General Artemas Ward, the first commander of the colonial forces at the start of the American Revolution, and it keeps a traditional town common with a white church and historic homes.

The General Artemas Ward House preserves the general's family home and belongings, and small landmarks such as the District No. 5 School recall the town's farming past. Lake Quinsigamond, a long, narrow lake famous for rowing races, forms the western border, crossed by the Burns Bridge on Route 9, while Flint Pond extends its waters to the south.

Shrewsbury is a convenient base for central Massachusetts, with Worcester's museums and restaurants minutes away and Boston about an hour east. Dean Park and the lakeshore offer easy outdoor time close to town.

Best seasonLate spring to fall, with rowing regattas in spring and colorful foliage in October.
Ideal stayA half day, or a quiet base for exploring Worcester and central Massachusetts.
ArrivingWorcester Regional Airport is about 20 minutes west; Boston Logan is about an hour east via I-290 and the Mass Pike.
