About Lowell

Lowell is a city of about 115,000 people on the Merrimack River, about 25 miles northwest of Boston. Founded in the 1820s by Boston investors as a planned textile town, it was one of the first large-scale factory cities in the United States, powered by a network of canals that drew water from the Pawtucket Falls. Thousands of young women, the Mill Girls, came from New England farms to work its looms.

The mills drew waves of immigrants from Ireland, Greece, Portugal and later Cambodia, and Lowell today has one of the largest Cambodian communities in the country. Lowell National Historical Park preserves the mills, canals and boarding houses, and its Boott Cotton Mills Museum has a working weave room where dozens of looms run at once.

Lowell is also the birthplace of writer Jack Kerouac, honored with a memorial park downtown, and painter James McNeill Whistler, whose birthplace is a museum. The University of Massachusetts Lowell, the Lowell Memorial Auditorium and the Merrimack Repertory Theatre add culture, and canal boat tours and riverside trails make it easy to explore the industrial landscape.

Best seasonMay to October for canal boat tours and outdoor events like the Lowell Folk Festival in July.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the national park, the mills, canal tours and downtown.
ArrivingLogan Airport is about 40 minutes away; commuter trains reach Boston North Station in about 45 minutes.
