About Salem

Salem is the capital of Oregon, a city of about 175,000 people on the Willamette River in the heart of the Willamette Valley, roughly an hour south of Portland. It grew from a Methodist mission founded in the 1840s, and Willamette University, established in 1842, is the oldest university in the western United States. Farms, orchards and vineyards surround the city in every direction.

The Oregon State Capitol is the city's landmark, an Art Deco building from 1938 topped by the gilded Oregon Pioneer statue, with cherry trees blooming on the Capitol Mall each spring. Nearby, the Hallie Ford Museum of Art shows Pacific Northwest and Native American art, the Elsinore Theatre hosts concerts and films in a 1926 Tudor Gothic movie palace, and the Willamette Heritage Center preserves a historic woolen mill and pioneer houses.

Riverfront Park is the city's playground, with a hand-carved carousel, a giant stone globe and paths along the river, and the Salem Saturday Market brings valley farmers and makers downtown from spring to fall. Silver Falls State Park, with its famous Trail of Ten Falls, is about 25 miles east, and dozens of Willamette Valley wineries are within a short drive.

Best seasonApril to May for cherry blossoms on the Capitol Mall, and June to September for dry, sunny days and the Saturday Market.
Ideal stayOne day for the Capitol, downtown and Riverfront Park, two with Silver Falls and wine country.
ArrivingPortland International Airport is about an hour north; Amtrak Cascades trains stop at Salem station.
