Hillsboro is the county seat of Washington County, a city of about 110,000 people at the western end of the Portland metro area. It grew from a pioneer farming town into a major tech center, home to Intel's largest campuses, while vineyards, farms and the Tualatin River still surround it.
Downtown Hillsboro centers on the Washington County Courthouse and its green lawns, with the Washington County Museum, restaurants, the Bag & Baggage theater company and a Saturday farmers market. Orenco Station, a walkable neighborhood built around a MAX light rail stop, has cafés, shops and award-winning urban design.
Rood Bridge Park offers a boat ramp and trails along the Tualatin River, and the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve protects marshes full of birds just south of downtown. The historic Imbrie Farm and Malcolm McDonald House recall the city's farming roots, and the wineries of the north Willamette Valley begin just outside town.
A planned walkable town center on the MAX Blue Line, often cited as a model new urbanist community, with restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries and shops around a central plaza. It is a pleasant place to eat and walk. Take MAX from Portland and get off at Orenco station.
Hillsboro's historic downtown around Main Street and the courthouse, with local restaurants, breweries, cafes, shops and a growing arts scene. It hosts farmers markets and summer events. The MAX Blue Line stops downtown, so it is easy to reach from Portland without a car.
A museum in a 1950s ranch-style home in Hillsboro with one of the finest rock and mineral collections in the Pacific Northwest, including crystals, thundereggs, fossils, meteorites and fluorescent minerals. Kids love it. Allow about an hour and a half and check opening days.
The county history museum in the Hillsboro Civic Center, with exhibits on Native peoples, pioneer settlers, farming and the growth of the high-tech industry in the Tualatin Valley. Changing exhibits explore local stories. It is near the MAX station; check hours before visiting.
A McMenamins property on the historic Imbrie family farm, with an 1866 Italianate farmhouse, a brewery, pubs, a distillery, a barn and lawns for summer concerts. It has a relaxed farm feel. Explore the historic buildings and art, and come on summer weekends for live music.
A popular farmers market in downtown Hillsboro and at Orenco Station during the warmer months, with local berries, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, crafts and prepared food. Saturday markets are the busiest. Check the schedule online, as days and locations vary by season.
A professional theater company based at The Vault Theater in downtown Hillsboro, known for inventive takes on Shakespeare, classic plays and new works. Its small theater makes performances intimate. Check the season online and buy tickets ahead, as runs are short.
The ballpark of the Hillsboro Hops, a minor league affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in the Hillsboro Stadium complex. Games feature family entertainment, low ticket prices and local food and beer. Summer evening games are fun; buy tickets online for fireworks nights.
A large wetland preserve on the south edge of Hillsboro with trails, boardwalks and viewing blinds for spotting herons, eagles, ducks and other birds. The education center has a famous preserved bald eagle nest. Visit in winter and spring for the most birds and bring binoculars.
A park along the Tualatin River with a rhododendron garden, canoe and kayak launch, trails, picnic areas and open lawns. It is a quiet spot for paddling the slow river. Visit in late April and May when the rhododendrons are in full bloom for colorful walks.
Hillsboro's oldest city park, close to downtown, with tall trees, picnic shelters, a playground, an aquatic center and the Shute Park branch library. It is a shady stop for families in summer. Pair it with a walk to downtown Hillsboro, a short distance away.
The county fair held each summer at the fairgrounds complex in Hillsboro, with livestock shows, carnival rides, 4-H exhibits, fair food and concerts. It has been free to attend in recent years, with a fee for parking. Go in the evening for cooler temperatures and the concerts.
