About Laramie

Set on a high, wind-swept basin at about 7,200 feet between the Laramie Range and the Medicine Bow Mountains, Laramie is Wyoming's college town and a gateway to granite and alpine backcountry. The University of Wyoming, the state's only four-year public university, gives the city its museums, concerts and youthful energy.

Laramie grew up in 1868 as a Union Pacific railroad town, and its brick downtown still lines the tracks. The Wyoming Territorial Prison, which once held Butch Cassidy, is now a state historic site, and the Ivinson Mansion recalls the wealth of a Victorian banker. Painted walls from the Laramie Mural Project brighten the side streets between cafes, breweries and outfitters.

Within an hour's drive are the wild rock towers of Vedauwoo, the Snowy Range Scenic Byway climbing past Medicine Bow Peak, and the birding marshes of Hutton Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Cheyenne, the state capital, is about 50 miles east over Sherman Summit.

Best seasonJune to September for mountain trails and the Snowy Range; winter brings skiing and snowshoeing nearby.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the university museums, downtown and a mountain day trip.
ArrivingLaramie Regional Airport has commuter flights; Denver International is about 2.5 hours south by car, and I-80 runs through town.
