About Pueblo

Pueblo is a city of about 112,000 people in southern Colorado, where Fountain Creek meets the Arkansas River about 40 miles south of Colorado Springs. Traders built El Pueblo, an adobe trading post, at the confluence in 1842, and the city later grew into one of the great steel towns of the West when the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company built its mill here in the 1880s. The steelworks earned Pueblo the nickname Pittsburgh of the West.

Today Pueblo has a strong Hispanic heritage and a proud working-class history. The Steelworks Center of the West tells the story of the mill and the many immigrant communities who worked there, and the El Pueblo History Museum stands on the site of the original trading post. The city is famous for its Pueblo chile, celebrated each September at the Chile and Frijoles Festival.

The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk winds through downtown with boat rides, restaurants and public art, and the Union Avenue Historic District keeps grand stone buildings near the 1889 Union Depot. The Pueblo County Courthouse, Rosemount Museum mansion and the Pueblo Zoo add history and family fun, and Lake Pueblo State Park offers boating and trails on the city's west side.

Best seasonApril to October; September for the Chile and Frijoles Festival.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the Riverwalk, Union Avenue, the history museums and Lake Pueblo.
ArrivingPueblo Memorial Airport has limited service; Colorado Springs Airport is about 45 minutes north.
