About Cheyenne

Cheyenne is the capital and largest city of Wyoming, with about 65,000 people on the high plains near the Colorado border. Founded in 1867 as a Union Pacific railroad town, it grew rich on cattle and rails, and its Western heritage is celebrated every July at Cheyenne Frontier Days, the world's largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration.

The restored 1887 Union Pacific Depot houses the Cheyenne Depot Museum and anchors a downtown plaza with concerts and events, while the Wyoming State Capitol has been beautifully restored. Holliday Park displays Big Boy No. 4004, one of the largest steam locomotives ever built, and the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum tells the rodeo's story.

Downtown has historic buildings, Western wear shops and restaurants, and the Cathedral of St. Mary is a striking Gothic landmark. The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens include a glass conservatory and a children's village, and Curt Gowdy State Park, a short drive west, offers granite trails, reservoirs and mountain biking.

Best seasonJune to September, especially late July for Cheyenne Frontier Days.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, museums and the gardens; longer during Frontier Days.
ArrivingDenver International Airport is about 90 minutes south; Cheyenne Regional Airport is close to downtown.
