About Wyoming

Wyoming is a city of about 76,000 people in Kent County, Michigan, bordering Grand Rapids to the south. Settlers arrived along Buck Creek in the 1830s, and the area was organized as Wyoming Township in 1848, named for Wyoming County, New York, where many early residents came from. It grew rapidly as a Grand Rapids suburb and became a city in 1959.

Wyoming is known for its long commercial corridor on 28th Street, home to Rogers Plaza, which opened in 1961 as Michigan's first indoor shopping mall, and for the 28th Street Metro Cruise, a huge late-summer celebration of classic cars. The city once also had Studio 28, a pioneering multiplex cinema.

Today visitors find a network of neighborhood parks with splash pads and trails, the paved Kent Trails along former rail lines, and a growing mix of Latino and Vietnamese restaurants and markets. Downtown Grand Rapids, with its museums, breweries and riverfront, is only about 10 minutes north.

Best seasonJune to September; late August for the Metro Cruise.
Ideal stayHalf a day, or a convenient base for Grand Rapids.
ArrivingGerald R. Ford International Airport is about 20 minutes east; US-131 runs through the city.
