About Fall River

Fall River is a historic mill city of about 95,000 people on the Taunton River in southeastern Massachusetts, near the Rhode Island line. In the late 1800s it was one of the largest textile centers in the world, nicknamed Spindle City, and enormous granite mills still line its rivers and hills. Generations of Portuguese, Azorean, French Canadian and Irish immigrants shaped its neighborhoods and food.

The city's most famous address is the Lizzie Borden House, scene of the notorious 1892 axe murders, now a museum and bed and breakfast. Battleship Cove, on the waterfront beneath the Braga Bridge, holds the largest collection of World War II naval ships in the world, led by the battleship USS Massachusetts.

The Granite Mill and Davol Mills recall the textile era, and Fall River Heritage State Park explains it along the river. The grand City Hall, the Fall River Public Library and B.M.C. Durfee High School show off Gilded Age architecture, and Portuguese bakeries and restaurants serve some of the best Azorean food in America. Newport and Providence are each about 30 minutes away.

Best seasonMay to October for the waterfront, Battleship Cove and Portuguese summer feasts.
Ideal stayOne day for Battleship Cove, the Lizzie Borden House and the mills.
ArrivingProvidence's T.F. Green Airport is about 30 miles west, and MBTA commuter rail now reaches Fall River from Boston.
