About Attleboro

Attleboro is a city of about 46,000 people in southeastern Massachusetts, close to the Rhode Island border, roughly halfway between Boston and Providence. Settled in the 1600s and incorporated as a town in 1694, it became a city in 1914 and grew into one of the world's leading jewelry manufacturing centers, home to companies such as L.G. Balfour, famous for class rings.

The city's most famous attraction is the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, whose Christmas Festival of Lights draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each winter. Capron Park Zoo, a small zoo set in a city park, is a family favorite, and the Attleboro Arts Museum and the Attleboro Area Industrial Museum tell the story of local art and the jewelry trade.

Downtown follows the Ten Mile River, where Balfour Riverwalk Park offers a pleasant stroll, and Mass Audubon's Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary protects woods and a pond on the city's edge. Commuter trains link Attleboro to both Boston and Providence.

Best seasonLate November to early January for the La Salette Festival of Lights; May to October for parks and the zoo.
Ideal stayA half day to a day, or an evening for the holiday lights.
ArrivingMBTA commuter rail reaches Attleboro from Boston in about 50 minutes; Providence's T.F. Green Airport is about 25 minutes away.
