About East Providence

East Providence is a city of about 47,000 people in Rhode Island, set on the east bank of the Seekonk and Providence rivers directly across from Providence. Once part of Massachusetts, it became part of Rhode Island in 1862, and it grew around waterfront industry, oil terminals and seaside resorts. Many residents trace their roots to Portugal, the Azores and Cape Verde, and Portuguese festivals and bakeries are part of local life.

The city's best-known landmark is the Crescent Park Looff Carousel in the Riverside neighborhood, a hand-carved 1895 carousel that survives from a famous amusement park. The East Bay Bike Path begins here and runs along the shore of Narragansett Bay toward Bristol.

Waterfront parks such as Bold Point Park, Sabin Point Park and Squantum Woods State Park offer views of the Providence skyline and the bay, and Rose Larisa Park has a small beach. Downtown Providence, Brown University and the shops of Federal Hill are just across the bridges.

Best seasonMay to September, when the carousel runs and waterfront parks are at their best.
Ideal stayA day trip or a quiet base for visiting Providence.
ArrivingRhode Island T. F. Green International Airport is about 20 minutes south; I-195 crosses the city.
