About North Kingstown

Clapboard captains' houses, a snug harbor full of sailboats and a church older than the nation set the tone in Wickford, the village at the heart of North Kingstown. The town stretches along the western shore of Narragansett Bay in Washington County, and its roots go back to a trading post Richard Smith set up in the 1630s near the site of today's Smith's Castle.

Much of the town's past is still standing. Wickford keeps one of the largest collections of eighteenth-century homes in New England, the Old Narragansett Church dates from 1707, and the painter Gilbert Stuart, famed for his portrait of George Washington, was born in a snuff mill in Saunderstown. In the twentieth century the Navy built bases at Quonset Point and Davisville, where the curved Quonset hut got its name and the Seabees trained.

Visitors browse the village shops, paddle the harbor, watch harbor seals at Rome Point in winter and turn up each July for the Wickford Art Festival. Newport and Jamestown are a short drive across the bay bridges.

Best seasonJune to September for the harbor and July art festival; November to April for seal watching at Rome Point.
Ideal stayOne day for Wickford and the historic sites, or two with a Newport trip.
ArrivingWickford Junction station has MBTA commuter rail to Providence and Boston; T. F. Green Airport is about 20 minutes north.
