About East Meadow

East Meadow is a suburban community of about 38,000 people in the Town of Hempstead in central Nassau County, Long Island, about 25 miles east of Manhattan. Once part of the open Hempstead Plains used for grazing, it grew from farmland into a residential suburb after World War II, and today it is best known as the home of Eisenhower Park, one of the largest parks on Long Island.

Eisenhower Park covers more than 900 acres of lawns, ponds and trees, with three public golf courses, the Nassau County Aquatic Center built for the 1998 Goodwill Games, the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre for free summer concerts, and the Nassau County 9/11 Memorial. On weekends the park fills with families, cyclists, runners and picnickers.

Just south of the park, East Meadow Farm offers a working community farm with gardens and seasonal programs. The community makes an easy base for central Long Island, with the Nassau Coliseum, the museums of Garden City, Jones Beach and the North Shore mansions all within a short drive.

Best seasonJune to August for free concerts and pools; September and October for mild weather and farm events.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day, usually as part of a wider Long Island trip.
ArrivingJFK and LaGuardia airports are about 30 to 40 minutes west; the Meadowbrook State Parkway runs along the east side of the park.
