About Kearney

Every March, roughly half a million sandhill cranes descend on the Platte River near Kearney, turning this central Nebraska city into one of the world's great wildlife-watching destinations. Long before the cranes drew crowds, the river valley was the main corridor of the Oregon, California and Mormon trails, guarded by Fort Kearny, the army post that gave the town its name, with a slightly different spelling.

That pioneer story is told inside the Great Platte River Road Archway, a museum that spans Interstate 80 like a bridge. Downtown, the Museum of Nebraska Art fills a former post office with paintings and sculpture from across the state, and the restored World Theatre shows films on a marquee-lit street. The University of Nebraska at Kearney keeps the town young, and its campus holds the Victorian Frank House.

Parks are part of the appeal, from the rock garden and lighthouse at Harmon Park to the lakes of Cottonmill and Yanney Heritage parks. Fort Kearny State Historical Park and the crane blinds at Rowe Sanctuary are a short drive away.

Best seasonMid-March to early April for the sandhill crane migration; May to October for parks and museums.
Ideal stayTwo days, or three during crane season to include a dawn and dusk viewing.
ArrivingKearney Regional Airport has flights to Denver; Interstate 80 runs along the south edge of town.
