About San Angelo

San Angelo is a West Texas city of about 100,000 people where the North and South Concho rivers meet, an oasis of shade trees and river walks in ranching country. It grew up across the river from Fort Concho, a frontier Army post founded in 1867, and later became a center of wool and mohair trading.

Fort Concho National Historic Landmark is one of the best-preserved frontier forts in the country, with stone barracks and officers' quarters. Along the Concho River Walk, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts sits in a striking modern building, and the International Waterlily Collection blooms with rare water lilies each summer. Downtown, Miss Hattie's Bordello Museum tells a colorful story of the city's wilder days.

The Tom Green County Courthouse and historic homes along streets such as Allen Street show off the city's early prosperity, and the restored Santa Fe Railway depot recalls the railroad era. Angelo State University adds a lively campus, and San Angelo State Park and nearby lakes offer hiking, fishing and wide-open West Texas skies.

Best seasonMarch to May and September to November for river walks and comfortable weather.
Ideal stayOne to two days for Fort Concho, the river walk and downtown museums.
