About Shoreline

Shoreline is a city of about 60,000 people on the shore of Puget Sound, directly north of Seattle in King County, Washington. The area grew in the early 20th century along the Seattle-Everett interurban railway and the Pacific Highway, and it incorporated as a city in 1995. Its name comes from the school district that once covered the area.

Today Shoreline is a green, mostly residential city of forested ravines, quiet neighborhoods and long views across the Sound to the Olympic Mountains. The light rail line now links it quickly to downtown Seattle, and the old interurban route has become a popular walking and cycling trail.

The highlight is Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, where steep paths lead down to a sandy beach with sunsets over the Olympics. Kruckeberg Botanic Garden displays native and rare plants on a former family estate, Hamlin Park and Shoreview Park offer forest trails, and the Shoreline Historical Museum tells the story of the area. Seattle's attractions are 20 minutes away, and the Edmonds ferry to the Kitsap Peninsula is just north.

Best seasonJune to September for dry, sunny weather and beach sunsets.
Ideal stayA half day to a day, easily combined with Seattle or Edmonds.
ArrivingSound Transit's 1 Line light rail stops at Shoreline South/148th and Shoreline North/185th; Seattle-Tacoma Airport is about 40 minutes away.
