About North Andover

North Andover was the original heart of colonial Andover, settled in the 1640s along the Cochichewick Brook, and its Old Center still feels like it: a sloping town common ringed by white clapboard houses, a meetinghouse and the 1715 Parson Barnard House. Poet Anne Bradstreet, the first published writer in the English colonies, lived here.

Later, mills along the brook in the Machine Shop Village and on the Merrimack River gave the town an industrial side, while wealthy Boston families built country estates. One of them, the Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens, is now open to the public with formal gardens and greenhouses.

Green space is the town's real draw. Weir Hill and the Ward Reservation offer hilltop views, Harold Parker State Forest spreads across thousands of wooded acres with ponds, and Lake Cochichewick shimmers below farm stands such as Smolak Farms, where apple picking and cider doughnuts fill autumn weekends.

Best seasonSeptember and October for foliage and apple picking; June for the gardens.
Ideal stayA day trip from Boston, or a relaxed weekend with hikes and farm stops.
ArrivingBoston Logan Airport is about 40 minutes south; the Haverhill commuter rail line stops in nearby Andover and Lawrence.
