About Beverly

Beverly is a coastal city of about 42,000 people on Massachusetts' North Shore, in Essex County across the Danvers River from Salem and about 20 miles northeast of Boston. Settled in the 1620s and incorporated as a town in 1668, it grew as a fishing, shipping and later manufacturing community.

Beverly claims an important role in early American history: the schooner Hannah, often called the first armed vessel commissioned for the Continental forces, sailed from here in 1775, and the Beverly Cotton Manufactory of 1787 was one of the first cotton mills in the country. In 1909 and 1910 President William Howard Taft spent his summers here, and grand estates still line the shore toward Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing.

Today visitors find historic houses run by Historic Beverly, the gardens of Long Hill and Lynch Park, sandy city beaches and a lively downtown along Cabot Street with two restored theaters. Endicott College sits on the ocean, and Salem, Gloucester and Rockport are all a short drive or train ride away.

Best seasonJune to September for beaches and gardens; October for foliage and Salem's Halloween season next door.
Ideal stayOne to two days, combined with Salem and Cape Ann.
ArrivingBoston Logan Airport is about 30 minutes away; the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line stops in downtown Beverly.
