About Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Wanuskewin Heritage Park lies in the valley of Opimihaw Creek on the northern edge of Saskatoon, where the creek meets the South Saskatchewan River. Archaeological evidence shows that Northern Plains peoples gathered here for thousands of years to hunt bison, harvest plants and hold ceremonies. Today the park is Indigenous-led and is pursuing recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitors begin at the interpretive center, which hosts galleries, performances and a restaurant featuring Indigenous-inspired cuisine. Trails wind through the Opimihaw Creek valley, passing archaeological sites and tipi rings, as well as a medicine wheel, a circular stone arrangement used for ceremonies. In 2019 a bison herd was returned to the park, and the animals can often be seen grazing in the valley. Guided programs and seasonal events focus on storytelling, dance and traditional skills, helping visitors understand the deep cultural significance of the land.

A visit pairs naturally with time in Saskatoon. The Meewasin Valley Trail runs along the river, while Saskatoon bridges and downtown, Broadway Avenue and the University of Saskatchewan campus are a short drive away. Beaver Creek Conservation Area, south of the city, offers additional riverside walking. The park is open year-round, and winter programs bring a quiet, snowy perspective.

Best seasonMay through September for trails and outdoor programs; winter offers snowy walks and fewer visitors.
Ideal stayA half day to a full day, combined with time in Saskatoon.
ArrivingMost visitors drive or take a taxi from Saskatoon, whose airport offers flights across Canada.
