About Bozeman

Ringed by the Bridger, Gallatin and Tobacco Root ranges, Bozeman is the kind of mountain town where a museum curator might discover a Tyrannosaurus rex and a skier can be on the slopes half an hour after breakfast on Main Street. It began in 1864 as a stop on John Bozeman's trail to the Montana goldfields and grew into a farm town, a college town and one of the fastest-growing small cities in the West.

Montana State University anchors the south side of town, and its Museum of the Rockies holds one of the world's great dinosaur collections, much of it dug from Montana badlands. Downtown's Main Street keeps brick blocks from the 1880s and 1890s that house outfitters, bookstores, galleries and busy restaurants, and the Emerson Center turns an old school into studios and stages.

The outdoors starts at the edge of town. Hikers climb to the College M or Sacajawea Peak, Hyalite Canyon hides waterfalls and world-class ice climbing, and Bridger Bowl is famous for its light powder. Big Sky is about an hour south, and the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park about an hour and a half.

Best seasonJune to September for hiking and festivals; December to March for skiing at Bridger Bowl.
Ideal stayThree to four days, more if adding Yellowstone or Big Sky.
ArrivingBozeman Yellowstone International Airport in Belgrade is about 15 minutes away; I-90 runs along the north side of town.
