About Brandon

Brandon is Manitoba's second-largest city, located on the Assiniboine River in the southwest of the province. Founded as a railway town, it became an agricultural hub for the surrounding farmland and earned the nickname Wheat City. Today it serves as a regional center for commerce, education and events.

Downtown Brandon holds historic brick buildings, shops and restaurants. The Riverbank Discovery Centre offers trails and information along the Assiniboine, while the Daly House Museum preserves the home of the city's first mayor. The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba showcases regional artists, and the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum highlights the area's role in training aircrews during the Second World War. The Keystone Centre hosts agricultural fairs, sports and concerts, including the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, and Brandon University adds a student presence and cultural events.

For travelers heading across the prairies, Brandon works as a practical stop or a base for nearby parks. Spruce Woods Provincial Park, with its sand dunes, and the Souris Swinging Bridge are within reach, while Riding Mountain National Park lies to the north for lakes and forests. Summers are warm and sunny, and winters are cold, with events moving indoors.

Best seasonJune through September for outdoor activities and nearby park trips.
Ideal stayOne to two days in the city, longer if visiting Spruce Woods or Riding Mountain.
ArrivingMost travelers drive along the Trans-Canada Highway; Winnipeg's airport is the main air gateway.
