About Minot

Minot is the fourth-largest city in North Dakota, set in the valley of the Souris River, also called the Mouse River, in the north-central part of the state. It earned the nickname Magic City for how quickly it sprang up after the Great Northern Railway arrived in 1886, and Minot Air Force Base lies just to the north.

The city is proud of its Nordic roots. Scandinavian Heritage Park gathers a full-size stave church replica, a Norwegian farmhouse, a Danish windmill and a giant Dala horse, and every fall the Norsk Hostfest draws visitors to the North Dakota State Fair Center for Scandinavian food, crafts and music. The State Fair itself fills the same grounds each July.

Families enjoy the Roosevelt Park Zoo along the river, the Dakota Territory Air Museum and the Railroad Museum of Minot in the old Soo Line depot. Downtown has the Taube Museum of Art and local cafes, and prairie lakes and wildlife refuges lie within an easy drive.

Best seasonJune to September; late July for the State Fair and early fall for Norsk Hostfest. Winters are very cold.
Ideal stayOne to two days, longer during the State Fair or Hostfest.
ArrivingMinot International Airport is just north of downtown; Amtrak's Empire Builder stops in Minot daily.
