About Winnipeg

Winnipeg, Manitoba's capital, stands at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers in the middle of the continent. For thousands of years the meeting point was a gathering place for Indigenous peoples, later becoming a fur trade hub and then a booming railway city. Its mix of Indigenous, Métis, French, and immigrant communities gives it a strong cultural life.

The Forks, where the rivers meet, is the city's social center, with a market, river walkways, and, in winter, skating trails on the frozen rivers. Beside it, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is a striking building and a national museum. The Exchange District, with its early twentieth-century warehouses and terra-cotta facades, holds galleries, theaters, and restaurants, while the Manitoba Museum and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, with its large collection of Inuit art, are nearby. The Manitoba Legislative Building is known for its neoclassical grandeur. Across the river, St. Boniface, the city's francophone quarter, has the ruins of St. Boniface Cathedral and the St. Boniface Museum. The Royal Canadian Mint produces Canada's circulation coins and offers tours, while Assiniboine Park and its zoo, home to polar bears, provide green space. FortWhyte Alive offers nature trails and bison viewing.

Winnipeg suits culture lovers and festival goers. Summers are warm, winters intensely cold yet celebrated with events like Festival du Voyageur.

Best seasonJune to September for patios and festivals; February for Festival du Voyageur and river skating.
