About Sooke

Sooke is a coastal community on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, west of Victoria, spread along the shores of the Sooke Basin and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The area is the home of the T'Sou-ke Nation, and the town grew around fishing, logging and farming. It offers a quieter, more rural alternative to the capital, with rainforest, rocky coves and views across the strait to the Olympic Mountains.

The Sooke Region Museum, near the entrance to town, covers local history and doubles as a visitor center. Whiffin Spit, a narrow finger of land reaching into the harbour, makes for a pleasant walk with water on both sides. Inland, the Sooke Potholes are a series of rock pools along the Sooke River, popular for swimming in summer. The Galloping Goose Regional Trail, a former railway line, links Sooke with Victoria for cyclists and walkers, passing by Roche Cove Regional Park. East Sooke Regional Park has a rugged coastal trail with rocky headlands and ancient petroglyphs. Farther west, the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail begins near China Beach, and Mystic Beach is known for a waterfall that tumbles onto the sand.

Sooke suits hikers, cyclists and travelers who want nature close to a city. The drive west continues along the Pacific Marine Circle Route toward Port Renfrew.

Best seasonSummer for swimming in the potholes and dry trails; spring and fall bring fewer visitors.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers coastal parks, beaches and a bike ride.
ArrivingMost travelers drive west from Victoria on Highway 14 or cycle the Galloping Goose.
