About Port Hardy

Port Hardy is the largest community on northern Vancouver Island, a fishing and resource town at the end of the island highway. The area is the homeland of Kwakwaka'wakw peoples, whose culture remains visible in local art and communities. For many travelers, Port Hardy is a stepping stone: ferries depart from here along the Inside Passage, and it serves as the gateway to the island's rugged northern tip.

The Port Hardy Museum offers local history and Indigenous artifacts, while Carrot Park and the Seawall provide easy walks along the harbour. The Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre explains the life cycle of salmon and the efforts to protect them. Nearby, the community of Fort Rupert is home to The Copper Maker Gallery, known for Kwakwaka'wakw carving and art. Storey's Beach and Beaver Harbour Park are pleasant for beachcombing and watching for wildlife. For a wilder experience, the long gravel road to Cape Scott Provincial Park leads to trails through rainforest to remote beaches such as San Josef Bay. Telegraph Cove, a short drive south, is a base for whale watching in Johnstone Strait, and ferries reach Alert Bay, home to the U'mista Cultural Centre.

Port Hardy suits travelers heading for the Inside Passage, hikers and those exploring the island's north. Rain is frequent, and lodging fills before ferry departures in summer.
