About Telegraph Cove

Telegraph Cove is a tiny boardwalk village on the northeastern coast of Vancouver Island, overlooking Johnstone Strait. It began in the early twentieth century as the northern end of a telegraph line, and later became home to a sawmill and a small community built on stilts over the water. Many of the original buildings have been restored as lodging and shops, giving the cove a distinctive, historic character.

A stroll along the Telegraph Cove boardwalk passes colorful houses, interpretive signs and the restored Fred Wastell's house, recalling the family that ran the sawmill. The marina is busy with whale-watching boats and kayak outfitters. Johnstone Strait is known for orcas in summer, along with humpback whales, porpoises and seals, and Robson Bight nearby is an ecological reserve where orcas have been observed rubbing on pebble beaches. Kayaking trips head into the islands of the Broughton Archipelago, and boat tours travel up Knight Inlet to watch grizzly bears in season. Nearby islands offer cultural visits: Sointula on Malcolm Island has Finnish heritage, and Alert Bay is home to the U'mista Cultural Centre, which holds a notable collection of Kwakwaka'wakw potlatch regalia.

Telegraph Cove suits wildlife watchers and paddlers who want a peaceful, small-scale base. Accommodation is limited, so summer stays should be booked early.

Best seasonSummer, especially July through September, for orca sightings and calm paddling conditions.
Ideal stayTwo to three days allows a whale tour, a kayak outing and a cultural trip.
ArrivingTravelers drive Highway 19 north on Vancouver Island, then take a short side road near Port McNeill.
