About Port Chester

Rock fans know Port Chester for one building: the Capitol Theatre, a 1926 movie palace where the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin played in the early 1970s and where big-name acts still fill the room today. The rest of this Westchester County village of about 30,000 rewards a wander too, from Latin American bakeries on Main Street to a riverfront at the Connecticut line.

Port Chester grew along the Byram River in the 1800s as a mill and port town, then became a manufacturing center known for its bolts and stoves. Waves of Italian, Irish and later Latin American immigrants shaped its neighborhoods, and today it is one of the most diverse communities in the county. The colonial Bush-Lyon Homestead recalls the Revolutionary War, when General Israel Putnam used it as a headquarters.

A day here pairs a concert or dinner with a stroll past the historic firehouse and the waterfront shops. Rye's Playland amusement park and the beaches of Greenwich, Connecticut are a few minutes away, and Manhattan is under an hour by Metro-North.

Best seasonYear-round for concerts and dining; May to September for the waterfront and nearby beaches.
Ideal stayAn evening for a show and dinner, or a full day combined with Rye and Greenwich.
ArrivingMetro-North's New Haven Line reaches Port Chester from Grand Central in about 45 minutes; Westchester County Airport is 10 minutes away.
