About Bridgeport

Bridgeport is the largest city in Connecticut, set on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Pequonnock River, about 60 miles northeast of New York City. Settled in the 1600s as part of Stratford and incorporated in 1836, it grew into a major manufacturing city, producing sewing machines, corsets, ammunition and helicopters.

Bridgeport's most famous resident was P. T. Barnum, the showman who served as mayor and made the city the winter home of his circus. The Barnum Museum, in an ornate 1893 building, tells his story, and Barnum also helped create Seaside Park, a beautiful waterfront park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. General Tom Thumb, Barnum's famous performer, was born here too.

Today the city has about 150,000 residents and a revitalizing downtown. The Total Mortgage Arena hosts hockey and concerts, the Beardsley Zoo is Connecticut's only zoo, and Seaside Park and Pleasure Beach offer swimming and views of the Sound. The Bridgeport and Port Jefferson ferry crosses to Long Island, and the Fayerweather Island lighthouse stands at the harbor entrance.
