About Fairfield

Fairfield is a coastal town of about 62,000 people on Long Island Sound in southwestern Connecticut, about an hour from New York City by train. Founded in 1639 by Roger Ludlow, it is one of the oldest towns in the state, and its colonial center was burned by British troops in 1779 during the American Revolution.

Today Fairfield combines a lively downtown along the Post Road with historic neighborhoods. Greenfield Hill is famous for its dogwoods and colonial houses, and the harbor village of Southport has elegant 19th-century homes, the Romanesque Pequot Library and Trinity Church. The Fairfield Museum and History Center tells the town's story near the old Town Green.

The shoreline is the town's summer draw, with public beaches such as Jennings Beach and Penfield Beach looking out toward Penfield Reef Lighthouse. Nature lovers can visit the historic Birdcraft songbird sanctuary or swim at Lake Mohegan, while Fairfield University adds museums and performances.

Best seasonMay to September for the beaches; May for dogwoods in Greenfield Hill; autumn for foliage.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the beaches, Southport and the museums.
ArrivingMetro-North trains serve Fairfield, Fairfield Metro and Southport stations; Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway pass through town.
