About Pearland

Pearland is a fast-growing city of about 125,000 people on the southern edge of Houston, mostly in Brazoria County along State Highway 288. It was founded in the 1890s and named for the pear orchards that early settlers planted on the flat coastal prairie, before storms and freezes ended the fruit business and the town grew into a busy suburb.

The small Old Townsite district keeps the town's early roots, with Zychlinski Park and community events. In the west, the master-planned Shadow Creek Ranch area and Pearland Town Center, an open-air shopping center, show the city's newer side. Pearland is also home to the Sri Meenakshi Temple, one of the best known Hindu temples in the United States.

Visitors come for Texas barbecue at Killen's, antiques at Cole's Antique Village, birdwatching at the Delores Fenwick Nature Center and festivals at Independence Park. Downtown Houston, the Texas Medical Center and Space Center Houston are all within about 30 minutes.

Best seasonOctober to April for mild weather; summers are hot and humid.
Ideal stayOne day, often as a base for Houston and Space Center Houston.
ArrivingWilliam P. Hobby Airport is about 15 minutes away and George Bush Intercontinental about 45 minutes; a car is essential.
